The HIV Clinical Training Program
The program consists of didactic sessions and rotations at various clinical sites throughout the Denver-metro area. Each training is individualized, to the extent possible, to meet the professional learning goals, practice needs, and interests of the participant. Typical training sessions are held over the course of three days.
GOALS
Goals of the Program
The goal of the program is to improve practitioners' abilities to provide ongoing care to their HIV-infected patients and to increase the number of practitioners working with HIV-infected persons throughout the Rocky Mountain region.
PROGRAMMING
Programming
The program consists of didactic training and two and one-half days of clinical rotations at the following organizations:
- Denver Health Medical Center - Dermatology Clinic, ID/AIDS Clinic, Early Intervention Services, Counseling and Testing Center, HIV Dental Clinic, including nutrition and psychosocial issues
- University of Colorado Health Sciences Center - HIV/AIDS Primary Care Program, AIDS Clinical Trials Unit
- Veterans' Administration Medical Center - Infectious Disease Clinic
Other sites that can be visited include:
- Children's Hospital HIV Program
- Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment State Lab
- Empowerment (Women’s HIV Project)
- Hospice of Metro Denver
- Howard Dental Clinic
- Visiting Nurses Association

Training sessions are held according to the clinical training schedule listed.
If a participant is unable to attend on these dates, additional sessions may be scheduled. Contact MPAETC for details.
REGISTRATION/APPLICATION
The cost of the program is only $75 for the three days, which is payable upon acceptance to the program. No refunds are available for cancellations less than two weeks prior to the training. Individuals who provide services through one of the Ryan White CARE Act title programs may register for a reduced rate.
Support for Attendance
Support is available for participant travel to and from the program and lodging. Travel support is only available to participants within the Mountain Plains region (those from ND, SD, NE, KS, NM, CO, WY, and UT). Travel arrangements will be made upon registration confirmation. TRAINING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the HIV Clinical Training Program, practitioners will be able to:
- Perform HIV risk assessments and provide information on risk reduction and recommendations regarding HIV testing;
- Conduct initial evaluation and follow-up of patients in early stages of HIV infection;
- Recognize and treat early symptoms and common manifestations of HIV infection; and
- Refer patients to appropriate medical and non-medical HIV resources;
- Understand the importance of interdisciplinary treatment plans for patients.
